History of linguistics

The history of linguistics deals with historical developments of the knowledge on grammar and linguistic relations, the history of terminologies and concepts, and it is moreover concerned with the processes generating knowledge on the relations between language and cognition. Pertinent studies at our faculty in Graz have centered around two poles: Wilhelm von Humboldt and the ensuing modernity in the 19th century (esp. Hugo Schuchardt) as well as the impact that typologically different languages (Basque, Huastec and others) have had on the European understanding of language and grammar.
